Shawn Green maintains his winning form both on and off the field with the introduction of a program to benefit children in need. SHAWN GREEN'S TEAM, a program initiated by Green, invites young patients from the Hospital for Sick Children down to SkyDome to watch a Blue Jays game from the comforts of a private SkyBox. The SkyBox is fully loaded with food and beverages and also includes specially designed Blue Jays loot bags for all of the children on SHAWN GREEN'S TEAM.
With the support of SkyDome and the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club, Green will host a party of twenty children from the Hospital for Sick Children every Saturday the Blue Jays play at home for the remainder of the season (August 14 & 28, September 18 & 25). Green initiated the program to let those children living with grown-up diseases such as cancer, leukemia and other challenges, have a chance to be `just kids' again.
``These children are the real heroes,'' said Green. ``I wanted to start a program which would give these kids something to look forward to. Knowing they are here watching us play and enjoying a day away from the hospital is an unbelievable feeling.''
Since joining the Toronto Blue Jays in 1994, Shawn Green has been an active member in the community. Green donated a portion of his signing bonus to the Metropolitan Toronto Housing Authority Breakfast Club (volunteer program that serves breakfast to children in Toronto's low income housing projects) and has maintained an active role in the community since day one. Green's charitable commitments include: Parkinsons Foundation, ALS Jr. Ironman (ALS Society), Honda Hit Run and Throw amateur baseball clinics, Cystic Fibrosis', Juvenile Diabetes, 65 Roses Sports Club and the United Jewish Federation.
``We admire Shawn and all of our players for everything they do in the community,'' said Peter Cosentino, director of marketing. ``Shawn's dedication to helping these children is a mark of a true all-star.''
The Blue Jays return from the road on August 13 for the first of a three game series against the Oakland Athletics (Friday's game time 7:05 p.m.). Waiting on deck for the Blue Jays is the Seattle Mariners, who lead off the three game series with the Jays on Monday August 16 at 7:05 p.m.
