Myself, Tim and my son Gary in Dunedin Florida '97
My son actually met Tim
before I did in Seattle in '95. Right from the first time Gary
met him he really liked him. When I met him a few weeks later I
found out why. Tim is a great guy. Like most players when treated
as just another human being, (what else could they be!) he's
kind, warm and always willing to have a chat when he has the
Tim has done so much for both Gary and myself. We will never forget his kindness. We will also never forget the day he was traded to Texas.
We were on our way to Florida for Spring Training. Gary had teased me on a daily basis that Shawn had been traded, as at the time it was rumored almost daily that Shawn would be sent to another team. My husband was driving and I was reading the newspaper. In a tiny piece about the Blue Jays I saw that Tim had been traded to Texas, for catcher Kevin Brown. When I told Gary he would not believe me. He thought I was joking just as he had. When I handed him the paper and he read it for himself I thought he was going to cry. (I know that feeling well myself now!)
After that it never did seem the same during BP at Skydome not to see Tim come running in from left field and wave as he went by or if he had a moment come over to say "Hi." In fact Gary hardly attended a game that season. I know how he must have felt, because it will be the same for me this year. Unless one of my favorites are there I don't think I will be able to go. Right field for the Jays belongs to Shawn. No matter how good Mondesi may be he will never be able to take Shawn's place, no more than anyone could take Crabbie's.
I'm sure my son is the only person apart from Tim who wears a "Crabtree" jersey. In fact he has two! We have many good memories of Tim, and I hope he has a few of us.
Thanks for everything Tim. We will never forget what you did for us in Chicago. Like Shawn you have our support whoever you play for!
